POSITION TITLE: Germplasm Technician
SUPERVISOR TITLE: Tissue Culture laboratory Manager

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Tissue Culture Laboratory Manager, the Germplasm Technician is responsible for the daily outlining of work assignments within the on-station and out-station germplasms, assist in the development of new and more efficient protocols; assist in develop a quality programme; provide training for new employees as well as existing ones and apply quality standards in germplasm management operations.

Core Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Maintaining standards:
    Evaluating and modifying existing protocols and processes and development of new ones.
    1. Checking and improving quality control procedures in the all in- vivo germplasms
    2. Establishing and maintaining procedures for minimizing and controlling hazards in germplasm
    3. Investigating and adapting appropriate techniques in germplasms
  2. Development of new and more efficient protocols
    1. Developing methods to improve quality of germplasm
    2. Executing experiments and preparing results for review
    3. Supervise field technicians and monitor the daily register of attendance
  3. Daily outlining of work and tasks
    1. Establishment and maintenance of germplasms on station and out station sites
      1. Site selection for germplasms on station and out station sites
      2. Identify new sources of clean and new germplasm
      3. Supervision of agronomic practices
      4. Supervise the preparation of media
    2. Supervision of Weaning and hardening operations
    3. Interface between extension and farmers
    4. Field evaluation of new germplasm
    5. Log of distributed plants and data collection on tissue cultured plants release to farmer

Key Competencies

BSc in Agronomy, Agriculture, Plant Biology, Horticulture, Agriculture or related field.

At least four years experience working in the area of Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Biology or related field.


  1. In-vivo germplasm conservation and maintenance
  2. Plant Genetics
  3. Familiarity with germplasm maintenance Standards
  4. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures

Physical, Mental and Environmental Issues

Physical Environment:

  • The work is performed mainly in a laboratory environment
  • Will be exposed to natural environmental conditions

Physical and Sensory Effort:

  • Simple muscular movements which involve the operation of machines and handling of field tools and equipment with some degree of skill, coordination, speed and accuracy is required
