A Call to Banana Farmers

The Government of Dominica is on a thrust to reduce its food import bill with concentration on foods that can be produced locally. To meet market demand for bananas and plantain, the Ministry is seeking to support core/ large banana farmers to improve productivity.

Benefits of the Support Programme

Input support to increase production to 10,000 per cycle farm labour, and technical advisory services to increase productivity
  • Eligibility Criteria:

    • Productivity/yield per acre (1 bunch per plant: 1 box or 690 bunches: 690 boxes per acre for crop harvest)
    • Consistent production at scale for trade or value addition
    • Significant levels of capital investments in assets (minimum of $50,000)
    • Demonstrable good agricultural practices
    • Employs local labour

    Consideration will be given to the following:

    • Farm conditions
    • Farmer’s experience
    • On form labor capacity

    Farmers must also be willing to:

    • Participate in inspections in keeping with expected codes of practice and any relevant regulations
    • Modernize existing amenities or farm facilities
    • Install modernizing equipment and technology or modify facilities or equipment to protect food safety
    • Ensure compliance with labeling and other environment requirements
    • Uphold occupational and other safety requirements
    • Pay for services to support production or become certified, where applicable
    • Support local labor recruitment, training, and retention
