Genetic ImprovmentThe Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry through its livestock breeding facilities, managed by the VET and Livestock Development Unit of the Division of Agriculture produces genetically superior breeding animals from government livestock stations for sale to livestock farmers at subsidized prices . These facilities include a Sheep and Pig Multiplication Unit at Grandbay and the Central Livestock Farm at Londonderry. The Central Livestock Farm was established in the late 1940's and provides specialized facilities for conducting the Ministry's various breeding programmes.

 

Breeds available at the Central Livestock Farm include:

Rabbits:

  • Flemish Giant/Carlifgonia White/French Silver hybrid,

  • Carlifonia White/French Silver hybrid

Goats:

  • Nigerian Dwarf,

  • Sannan,

  • Boar,

  • Anglo-Nubian,

Sheep:

  • Blackbelly,

  • Doper/Black Belly hybrid

Cows:

  • Brangus,

  • Holsteine,

  • Jersey-Holstein hybrid

Breeds available for sale at the Grandbay Sheep and Pig Multiplication unit include

Pigs:

  • Large White/Duroc hybrid
