Division of Agriculture
The Division of Agriculture is the primary public sector institution with direct responsibility for Agriculture and performs its function by providing technical assistance, regulatory and support services, and the policy framework to guide the development of the agricultural sector. To execute this mandate, the Division possesses of a number of specialized units, which collaborate with Agencies and Institutions in Agriculture to provide technical, regulatory and support services in areas such as crop and animal husbandry, animal and plant health, agricultural engineering and land use, soil and water management, farm management, agricultural information, pre and post harvest technology, agro processing support, laboratory diagnostic support and research. We lead by:
  • Providing expert policy advice and analysis to the government.
  • Implementing governments' policy consistent with individual and population needs.
  • Promoting investment in the agricultural sector
  • Encouraging new approaches to information management and communication to support better agricultural and rural transformation.
  • Developing working partnerships with farmer organizations, regional and international agencies, related NGOs and private sector organizations and other stakeholders to ensure delivery of high quality, client focused and cost effective services.
The high quality services which we intend to provide, through partnerships and collaboration, will feature:
  • Quality extension education programmes
  • High quality technical services that reflect evidence of best practice including a systematic approach to improvement through trials and innovation.
  • Measurable improvements in food production, farm incomes, and foreign exchange earnings from agricultural exports.
  • Food and nutrition security to satisfy the needs of our people.
  • An integrated approach to pest management with great emphasis on biological control.
  • Increased use of new, improved technologies to enhance productivity and competitiveness.
  • Increased investment in agriculture with greater responsibility placed on private sector to make investment decisions with public sector playing a largely informational, regulatory, facilitative and technical support role.
