Disease Monitoring Surveillance and Control

Disease MonitoringThe Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry implements pest/disease monitoring surveillance and control programs through the VET and Livestock Development Unit and the Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit of the Division of Agriculture. These programs are aimed at providing the environment necessary for effective and sustainable agricultural production and safeguarding animal and plant resources against the introduction of invasive pests and diseases while satisfying international sanitary and phytosanitary trade obligations. These services are provided by our team of capable and professional livestock and plant protection officers located throughout the seven agricultural regions and at the various ports of entry.

Monitoring and surveillance is conducted through targeted programs such as:

  • Amblyoma Tick Elimination Program

  • Varroa Mite Control Program

  • Foot and Mouth disease, BSE, CSF, prevention and awareness Programs

  • Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Awareness Program

  • Giant African Snail Control Program

Surveillance programs are geared at identifying and eliminating targeted pests and diseases which affect agricultural production, and in turn food security by increasing public awareness of the symptoms and signs associated with these diseases and pests, training agricultural producers in Integrate Pest Management practices, and provision of animal drugs and plant chemicals for treatment of affected plants and/or animals.
